Have You Introduced Anyone To Blogging?
While attending SOBCon08 this past weekend, there were a few people that I spoke with that commented about the fact that their friends and family just did not understand the whole “blogging thing.”
In my life away from the Interweb, I have to say that I am in that group as well for the most part. There are a few people that “get it” and even a few that I have tried to get involved with their own blog - Dad, if you’re reading this, you need to actually, you know, post to your blog once in awhile.
For the most part though, my friends and family either don’t know that I write for a few different blogs or they do know and scratch their head in bewilderment that I would do something like this. Earlier tonight, my wife mentioned to me that a few of the neighbors were outside and the topic of blogs came up.
They were discussing what a blog was and how it is possible to make money from one. It was a conversation that I would have liked to been a part of, as it would have been fun to share with them the things that I have learned and maybe even convince them to start their own blog.
Have you introduced anyone to blogging?
Did they start their own blog?
Are they still blogging?
As I mentioned earlier, of the people in my life that are aware of my blogs, only my Dad has taken the step to start his own blog; although I use that term loosely as there have been very few updates made to his site.
Since starting my first blog, I’ve tried to get a few people interested but it has never worked out. The reasons vary from not having, or wanting to spend, the time required to build a blog to feeling that nobody would be interested in what they had to say.
Within my close circle of family and friends, I am the only one blogging - at least that I know of.
Outside of any friends that you have made via blogging, do any of your friends or family write their own blog? Why is it that there seem to be so many bloggers operating in a state of real-world isolation, in that their inner circle of contacts are not bloggers?

I have introduced several people to blogging. A few of them really took to it. Fun to do, and great to watch them take off!

I told some friend of me to start blog but they said they ware not interested and they do not have time to blog. Maybe if I can earn much money from blog, they will start to blog too.

Um… my sisters blog every now and then. I would say that it’s influenced by me but I wouldn’t say that I’m the only influence. My feeling is that the purpose of blogging has changed when time changed. We didn’t have Facebook, Myspace, or even Friendster back then. When we need to connect to each other, add each other as friends, we need to have some kind of blog account like Xanga or LiveJournal. So having a blog is like having a little profile on social networking site. Of course, those are mostly personal sites and fewer people were trying to actually build traffic, not to mention trying to make money from it.

Starting a blog can be quite a duanting task. Its easier if you are used to writing a diary. Even then the pure visability of your personal thoughts can frighten some people.
Haven’t introduced anyone to blogging, but I have prodded a few bloggers back out of retirement, by posting comments and literally demanding to be replied to.

I can understand what you have experienced. For a lot of people it is a strange idea to grasp. Even people who regularly use a group mail system like yahoogroup, consider blogging as a waste of time. I have tried and have so far succeeded in converting one to be a blogger.
Some good bloggers use social networks to post their articles and generate a lot of traffic. Sad that they do not do it individually.
No one I know is remotely interested in blogging. They just don’t want to spend the time I guess.
If you think it’s hard describing to people how a blog can make money, imagine my trying to explain how I make money/my living writing for blogs.
Like you, aside from the friends I made via blogging, none of my non-blogger friends have jumped into the ’sphere. Some of them claim to have poor writing skills and others just don’t seem interested at all.

I roped my wife into starting a blog about a year ago. She posted a couple of times but we got busy and it fell by the wayside.
Good question regarding the inner circle not being bloggers…wondering if it’s the public nature of the blog that keeps people away.

I think this is a good reminder to be sharing the knowledge around our circles. As you know, I helped Sarah start her blog but she hasn’t been very proactive about it. It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
That leaves the amazing opportunity to the rest of us who do enjoy it and like to break our own records every month to blog and be merry.
Nice post.

None have started blogging. I’ve not told anyone that I am a part time blogger as my blog is not all that successful so I don’t really want to humiliate myself publically. When I get rich and famous because of it then that’s the time I’ll share. Though I do like keeping how I’m making money online a complete mystery to my friends!

I think unless you have a natural inclination to blog, i doubt that you can teach anyone to acquire the passion. And LOL: “Dad, if you’re reading this, you need to actually, you know, post to your blog once in awhile.”
I have not introduced anyone to blogging, mainly because I’m not that into it. I enjoy reading other people’s blogs, though.
I haven’t actually introduced anyone to it but after reading this I might have to!
We have to admit that blogging is a more and more popular thing now. I have introduced some of my friends to set up a blog and they feel happy of blogging because they can write something every day and also put some pictures to share with every one!
I introduced one of my friends to blogging. He started her own blog but after few month he stooped her blog I don’t know why.

Good post. After describing the “money making powers” of a blog both my dad and little sister they started their own blogs. That only lasted about two to three weeks and then they bailed out.
I introduced my mother to the blogosphere. She retired 2 years ago and suddenly found out she had too much free time. And since she has always been an intelligent woman with her own opinion on many cases, she had no trouble getting the “fuel” for her writing. She has met many friends online, exchanges emails daily and is much happier than before
I have tried but not quite successful.

My brothers got me to blog, then when I joined my sister decided to make one for her and her husband. I want my parents to start blogging, but I don’t think that they will. Blogs are rad though.
I set up a blog for my niece this Christmas and taught her the basics. She has written over 100 entries.
My daughter is just about ready to start her own horse riding blog (her absolute passion) but apart from that, I haven’t really had the opportunity to convince anyone else about the joys of blogging.
Do you find that there is something addictive about blogging? What i find most addictive about blogging is that what you say is read by so many people and you get to connect with people in a hitherto impossible manner and talk to people and exchange views with people that you would never meet otherwise.
When I told my parents what I do online, they were quite surprised. Blogging, and Internet in general, opened some doors for me I never knew existed. Now that I remember how I was before I started blogging, I am quite surprised myself. Introducing people to new things and spreading the word is something I love to do. I hooked 2 of them only, but I will increase that number for sure

When I first heard about blogging, I thought it would be perfect for a couple of my brothers who are both English majors. They were always writing stuff, but for some reason they’ve just never taken to the blogging world. It’s not that their techno Luddites or anything, they just don’t seem to have any interest in it.
