Blogging For Money :: May 2008

You’ll recall that last month I had record earnings from my blogs as I surpassed the $700 per month mark for the first time.

Unfortunately I lost out on a few Amazon affiliate commissions that I had been hoping to receive. After setting an earnings record, I continued to set the bar a little higher and had the goal of surpassing $800 this month.

The month of May went by in a blur - partly due to my time spent in Las Vegas and my time starring in Home Alone 5: The Bachelor.

Dollars and Cents

The purpose of these monthly updates is to give all of you insight into what I am doing to make money from my blogs, as well as what I have tried that did not work out so well. As I will discuss in a future post, this may hurt my efforts but my goal is to be as transparent as possible.

Here is the Blogging For Money recap for May:

  • AdSense:
  • Kontera:
  • ReviewMe:
  • TextLinkAds:
  • Amazon:
  • LinkWorth:
  • Private Ads:
  • Affiliate:
  • PayPerPost:
  • Misc:
  • Grand Total:
  • $81.24
  • $12.36
  • $0.00
  • $263.57
  • $5.57
  • $188.31
  • $159.00
  • $0.60
  • $0.00
  • $0.00
  • $710.65

While I was not able to surpass the earnings from April, I was happy to sustain the earnings above $700 for the 2nd month in a row. In addition, I may see a slight increase from these numbers as some of the affiliate earnings report after the first week of the new month.

Last month I mentioned that Kontera may be on the way out but there was a modest increase in Kontera earnings this month. Therefore I will continue to monitor the effectiveness of Kontera and consider my alternatives.

In previous updates, I have been asked numerous times if using LinkWorth and TLA have caused me any problems. Each month I have been able to answer no to that question - until now. However, with over $450 in earnings from those two sources I am not rushing to make any changes.

One pleasant surprise was to actually have a small amount of earnings from Amazon. I’ve begun to see some modest success with sales originating from a particular post and will continue to tweak this to see if I can maximize my earnings.

Plans for June

Summer vacation has started for the kids, which means spending time on the blogs is getting harder and harder. After visiting Las Vegas and the Memorial Day weekend, I had another bout with the blogging wall but now feel energized and ready to go.

Tonight I will be attending a local tweetup and am looking forward to seeing a few people that I met at SOBCon08 and challenging myself to be more extroverted as I meet new people.

While I may have fallen short of setting a new earnings record, I will continue to work towards the next stepping stone of $800 in monthly earnings. In the last few weeks I have been investigating a handful of new tools to use on my blogs and will have to experiment with each of them to see if there is any potential.

First off, congrats on your continued success!

Now, what happened that you have to change your answer to whether TLA and Linkworth are causing you any problems? I don’t recall reading anything about this here so didn’t realize there were any…or maybe this is something that you don’t really care to talk about…

Oh, and I’m still waiting for your list of reasons you’d rather ride your Harley than drive your car :)

I look at this tally of yours every month, but I still find it kinda amazing when all of it adds up to over $700. I don’t do this now, but I used to, and it drove me crazy trying to figure out a way to squeeze something out of my blogs. You gotta write a post about how you pushed this blog up from nothing to $700.

This is definitely an inspiration for bloggers out there trying to make money off of their blogs. $700 a month may not sound like a whole lot to some, but to those out there barely making a few dollars a month off of AdSense, it’s a big deal! Can’t wait to see when you hit your first $1,000 month! And I agree with Ling, I’d love to see a post about how you went from $0 to $700 off of your blogs.

Congratulation again. It’s really amazing that your earning is growing. Last month is also my first month where I get more than $150 from a site. And I got it with AdBrite.

I tried TextLinkAds but until now (3 weeks) I have not sold any ads.

Congratulations Derek. I have been seeing you do this month after month and this is very inspiring indeed. Seven hundred bucks is nothing to sneeze at doing what you are doing and the way you are doing it. You will get there, not to worry.

Nice work again Derek, you can put some by to start saving for the wife’s long birthday list for next year.

In all seriousness, I’m sure you will hit the $800 mark before too long.

Hi Derek,

I’m new to your site, I found you searching for information about LinkWorth. It sounds like you are making steady progress. That’s great! It gives all of us bloggers out there a boost to hear these success stories. Keep up the great work.

I love how you are so specific with how you make your money. It really lets us readers know, for our own websites, what is most lucrative. You seem to be doing quite well with this blog! I could use an extra $700 a month.

Those are some very nice numbers, congrats man! I am especially impressed with TextLinkAds. I have been with them on my tech site for several months now, lowered the price, etc and I still dont have any advertisers. Any suggestions?

Congrats. Considering that you have a fulltime job and blogging part time, that’s quite a good alternative income.

Trust me when I say, any money is good money. Making money on the ‘net is no joke, and you have to be prepared for the long haul. I feel you about the PR issue as well…most of the time we waste time getting too wrapped up in that stuff anyway.

You are very industrious Derek, I personally salute you for that. Even though you did not surpass your record you have maintained your earnings on the high level. Once again congratulations to you.

IMO, Amazon is now worthless since they’ve reduced their cookie lifetime to 24h.

Congrats on a stellar month! I think that $700+ is awesome and I am going to keep my eyes on your blog and your progress and hopefully will a learn a little along the way. I suspect you will find increasing from your current level to say $1,000 much easier and swifter. Keep the upward momentum going!
