Thursday Tidbits :: It’s All Good

On a Thursday evening that finds me grimacing through the pain of listening to the terrible NFL Network announcers calling the game between my Beloved Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints, I thought it would be a good time to give you a collection of random tidbits.

Syte Black Winner

As part of my Syte Black review yesterday, I mentioned that I would be giving away a free copy of the tool to one lucky winner.

Well, the random number generator has spoken and the winner is…JiMpiSh!

Now, I have to say that I find this entirely ironic - although certainly fitting. You see, JiMpiSh is the one that notified me about this tool on twitter. After entering numerous contests that I have hosted and not being selected as a winner, JiMpiSh takes home the prize on a contest that was in part made possible because he told me about the tool.

If I didn’t know better, I would think that the Random.org Integer Generator knew a thing or two about karma. Congrats buddy!

DIYThemes Thesis Purchase

After much debate - and foolishly passing on the 20% off discount on Black Friday - I decided to break down and purchase the Developer’s License for the Thesis WordPress theme from the guys (Chris Pearson and Brian Clark) at DIYThemes.

While I don’t have the first test site ready for you to view just yet, I have to say that this theme is absolutely amazing and I love the ability to customize just about everything with the use of hooks. By purchasing the developer’s license, I am able to use the theme on multiple sites as well, so it might make an appearance here before too long.

Gambling Man

While I am not a big gambler (the nickel slots are about my speed), I do enjoy placing a wager on a sporting event here and there. Earlier today I was having a chat with Andrea from According to Andrea when she asked if I’d like to make a bet on the football game tonight.

You see, I am from Chicago and Andrea is from New Orleans, so our two teams are battling it out tonight. While I expressed my concerns that Drew Brees would pick apart the Bears secondary, I agreed to the bet.

The stakes?

Well, we are real high rollers…so we bet that the loser has to write up a glowing review of the other on their blog. Right now it is looking like we’ll all be reading Andrea’s thoughts about me soon, as the Bears have bust out the whoopin’ stick and are leading 21-7 right now.

Affiliate Sales

Lets wrap up the tidbits with a quick discussion about affiliate sales. With the launch of Syte Black today, I was hoping that I would arrive home and be greeted with news of multiple sales through my affiliate link.

Hmm…maybe the system is down because the stats show a big fat ZERO in the sales column thus far. We’ll see what happens as we move forward and I will continue to monitor my AdWords campaign now that the product is actually live. You can be sure that I will let you all know how it progresses as well.

While the Syte Black affiliate sales are, well, nothing to write home about, I have also signed on as an affiliate for the DIYThemes that I mentioned earlier. In the near future, I will write more about my thoughts regarding the Thesis theme and show you my first site with the theme. But for the time being, I have to say that this is an extremely impressive theme even when you consider the cost.

So that concludes Thursday Tidbits for today…now, back to the game!

Syte Black :: Can It Make You Money?

Syte Black

Last week I received a note from a friend on twitter asking me if I had heard anything about a new product called Syte Black. Since I had not heard anything about it, I asked a few questions and was intrigued by the concept.

What Is Syte Black?

In a nutshell, Syte Black is an application (or tool) that has been designed to create a complete website, including integration with affiliate programs from ClickBank, AdSense, and Amazon, in a matter of minutes.

According to the official website, Syte Black is described as:

It will be your own ready-made money making website with cutting edge features and super-sleek graphics. No need to put up with an ugly website anymore!

Syte Black is being billed as a “set it and forget it” type situation, at least in terms of the website itself as you will still need to spend time (and money) promoting your new site. However, I wanted to know more about it and if I thought it would really work to make me money.

Sounds Interesting, But I Want To See It

The product doesn’t officially launch until December 11th, so even if I was entertaining the idea of purchasing it to use as an experiment, I was out of luck. However, I quickly had the idea that people might be jumping at the chance to buy this product so I signed up to be an affiliate.

That same night that I learned of the product, I had taken one of my domains and created a Syte Black splash page and linked it up to my affiliate link. In addition, I signed on with Google AdWords to do a little promotion of my splash page in the hopes of landing a few affiliate sales that would cover the cost of the product if I wanted to make a purchase.

After giving it more thought, I wasn’t content to sit back and wait without knowing more about the product. So I fired off an email to the creator of the software, Adam Carn, and asked him if he would be interested in providing me a copy to review. He agreed and I now had a chance to see what Syte Black was all about.

Getting Started

Syte Black is a breeze to get started, as I simply had to unzip the package to my local system and launch the EXE of the main program. Once the tool fires up, there is one simple screen that is standing between you and your new website (and theoretically your Interweb riches).

Syte Black

It is a little difficult to see in the screen above, but there are four basic fields that you need to get started: domain name, ClickBank ID, AdSense publisher code, and Amazon affiliate ID.

Once you enter these values, which if you have not yet signed up with each affiliate program you will need to do so, you are ready to start on the values for your new site. There are seven preset categories, or pages, for your site and you only need to enter a page description, keywords, and a link to content. For the content, Syte Black is setup to pull in content from Article Dashboard so you simply need to visit the website and select articles that you feel will be relevant to the topic of the page.

After entering in all of this information, simply clicking the “Modify Files” button begins the process of inserting your affiliate information into each page and integrating the content articles that you had selected.

Publishing Your Website

With the modifications completed, you have two options on how to actually publish your new site:

  • Open your own FTP tool and transfer the files to your host manually.
  • Enter your domain name, username, and password into the tool and click the “Upload Files” button.

Personally, I opted to manually upload the files to my hosting account on my own. Since that is a process that I do on a regular basis, I felt it was just as easy as entering all of the information into the Syte Black tool.

In just a few short minutes, I had created and published a Syte Black sample site that has my affiliate information completely integrated.

Sure, But Can It Really Make Me Money?

This is the question that we all really want answered - can Syte Black live up to the claims and generate a “money making website”?

While the site looks acceptable, particularly for something created so easily, and I believe the site will make some money - I have doubts on how much money it will make.

Of the three types of revenue built into the site, only one, ClickBank is going to make you much on a per-action basis. While I believe in using AdSense and Amazon affiliate links, the fact is that they each require a large number of clicks and/or purchases to generate a considerable amount of money.

So what does that mean?

Well, as with any other site, the ability to earn money with a Syte Black generated website is really going to come down to how well you can drive traffic to the site. Without high traffic volume, I just don’t see how this website is going to generate any type of income.

However, the real appeal of Syte Black is how easy it is to build a website and have it published to your host. It really is a matter of minutes, with the most time being spent trying to find relevant articles, until you can have a new website, complete with three sources of potential revenue, created and published.

If the idea of creating your own website is too daunting for you, then you might find this tool to be useful. However, if you are comfortable with writing code and creating your own site, you might be better served by continuing to do the work on your own.

Final Thoughts And Impressions

In terms of what Syte Black was designed to do - quickly and easily build a website with integrated revenue streams - it does the job fairly well.

However, there are a few things that I think could be improved upon, such as allowing the user the option to set their own categories and using a dynamic layout with CSS styling as opposed to an HTML table layout. In addition, having a site with free content from a site like Article Dashboard means it will be more difficult to rank well in the search engines.

Personally, I don’t feel that Syte Black is the right tool for me but that is because I have a technical background and am comfortable with designing my own website and writing code. As a matter of fact, I have created sites (SpicyTechDeals.com and CheapTechPrices.com) that are somewhat similar to what you get with Syte Black.

Given that this tool is aimed more at beginners and/or people without the technical knowledge of creating their own site, I do think that Syte Black has its purpose. If you don’t know how to create a site, and either don’t want to take the time to learn or hire someone to do it for you, then you might find Syte Black useful.

Of course, you need to keep in mind that your ability to earn money with your Syte Black website will depend on how much traffic you can bring into your site. But ultimately that is true whether you have created the site on your own or with the assistance of Syte Black.

If you do decide to give Syte Black a try, I’d welcome you to purchase the tool via my Syte Black affiliate link.

Not Convinced? How Would You Like A Free Copy Of Syte Black?

In talking to the creator of Syte Black, I asked if he would be willing to sponsor a contest here on the blog to give one of my readers a free copy of Syte Black.

If you’d like to get your hands on a copy that you can use to test, simply leave a comment below letting me know why you would like to try Syte Black.

I’ll select one winner at random on Thursday, December 11th, 2008 (meaning you need to act quickly if interested).

Win Canadian Club Whisky Schwag

As part of the Movember recap, I mentioned that there would be an upcoming contest to win a couple of prizes courtesy of Canadian Club Whisky.

Canadian Club Whisky, which happens to be a fine beverage that I have been known to enjoy from time to time, was one of the sponsors of Movember and provided me with a cool gift package to give away in celebration of Movember.

Canadian Club Whisky Schwag

There will be one lucky winner, selected at random, that will receive the following gift package:

  • 2009 Canadian Club Calendar
  • Canadian Club Movember T-Shirt
  • Canadian Club Movember Flask Set
Movember Prize Package

Contest Rules

Entry requirements are extremely easy - simply leave a comment on this post and you’re entered for your chance to win! While not required, I’d like you to include your favorite charity in your comment.

  • Comments will be accepted until 11:59pm CST, December 16th, 2008.
  • Only one entry per person will be accepted.
  • Winner will be selected at random using the Random Integer Generator on Wednesday, December 17th, 2008.
  • Winner will have seven days to respond with their contact information. In the event winner does not respond, an alternate winner will be selected.

Prize Details

Since it wasn’t possible to include these details in the picture, I just wanted to share a few things about the prizes that make this gift package pretty cool.

First, which you can see in the picture but is worth repeating, is the saying on the shirt: “Your Dad’s Mo Was Popular With The Ladies

The calendar, which might seem like a “ho-hum” kind of gift, has a coolness factor due to the monthly sayings, as well as the Tip of the Month and Tipple of the Month (which is a new drink recipe each month). The monthly sayings include gems such as:

  • Your dad missed the ball drop
  • Your dad gave out the nicknames
  • Your dad’s aftershave worked

Throughout the calendar, as well as on the shirt, you will notice the slogan for Canadian Club Whisky: Damn Right Your Dad Drank It. When the lucky winner receives these gifts, they’ll be saying, “Damn right this is a sweet prize package.”

Good luck everyone and thanks again to Canadian Club Whisky!

** UPDATE ** To clear any confusion, there are no restrictions on who can enter the contest. Given that Movember was an international event, I will ship the prize worldwide to whoever happens to win.

Speedlinking - Friends, Old And New

In the time since “officially” becoming a blogger, one thing that has been a focal point for me is sharing the wealth. That has taken a variety of forms, including the ability to provide tips and tricks that I have learned over the years or being in a position to donate time and/or funds to a worthwhile cause.

As many of you know, another way that I like to share the wealth is by distributing a healthy dose of link love to people that stop by this blog, as well as people that I find interesting in some way.

For this edition of Speedlinking, I wanted to share a handful of links from a few friends - one I’ve known nearly my entire life while others I have known since I began blogging and a couple that I have yet to really “meet” but I hope to soon.

1. The person behind GrowMap is someone that I’ve known online for some time now and I have a feeling one of the reasons we have clicked is that we both believe in some of the same things. One of those things just happens to be that we both love sharing the link love on our blogs. Thanks for all of your generosity!

2. Over at nerdhook, you will find Ryan, one of my friends that I have known for much of my life. Knowing him like I do, I can understand why this happens to be the oddest item that the “Amazon Remembers” service remembers for him. Since Ryan is still relatively new to blogging, I’d love it if you can jump over and share a few thoughts with him as well (there, now you can stop begging Ryan, lol).

3. Two people that I have been seeing more and more of across the Interweb yet haven’t had the pleasure to chat with are Louis Gray and Mike Fruchter. As a sign of perfect timing, I came across 10 pointers to generating traffic to your blog, which happens to be a guest post from Mike on Louis’ blog. Give it a read to see which things you are doing well and where you can improve, and feel free to let me know where you think I can improve too.

4. One of the people that I have known since my early days with blogging is Stephen from Stephen Fung DOT NET. I’ve even had an opportunity to review a LowePro camera bag for his site FutureLooks.com, and have another bag in my possession now. But the post that recently caught my eye, considering I need to do the same for my MacBook, was his video on upgrading his MacBook Pro memory from 2GB to 4GB. Why did it take so long Stephen?

5. Another person that I have noticed around the Interweb recently but again have not had the chance to connect with yet is “Stupid Blogger” from Is This Stupid?. Having been frustrated myself recently with certain services, I appreciated this post on why Technorati sucks - and it might not be for the reasons you are thinking.

He’s Humping Me!

During our most recent Q&A session, Nicole from Great Prices Here had made a request for more funny content on the blog. Since one of my goals with this blog is to deliver content that the community enjoys, I thought that I would try to sprinkle in some more humorous posts here and there.

So naturally when I made a visit to Break.com the other day and came across this video, I knew that I just had to share it as I could not stop laughing - even after watching it multiple times.

After watching this clip a handful of times, I had to sit and question what was the most disturbing funny part of the video - the fact that the dog is trying to hump this little kid or the fact that the man, who I assume is the dad, is laughing hysterically?

But the best part, which made me laugh so hard I nearly cried, was when I turned up the speakers to hear what the little kid was saying and heard, “He’s humping me!
