Should I Be Using MySpace?

by derek on March 22, 2007 · 19 comments

A recent post by Oubipaws on a quick MySpace top friends trick got me thinking about MySpace and whether or not it holds a place for me.
In the few times I have actually visited various MySpace pages, I am usually turned off by the completely obnoxious designs and music that starts playing on each page. Maybe that is just the programmer/designer in me because the majority of these pages look terrible or maybe I am just getting too old to appreciate MySpace anymore.
But I still question whether or not I am missing out on anything by not being a participant at MySpace. As I entered into the world of blogging, I read numerous articles on how you can leverage a MySpace account (or multiple accounts) to help drive traffic to your site and bring in additional income. However, I have yet to actually act on any of these ideas.
This afternoon I was listing to the Covino and Rich show on Sirius MAXIM Radio and they were discussing the idea that people may be costing themselves job opportunities as a result of their MySpace page. According to the show, more and more employers are checking out websites, including MySpace or FaceBook, to get an idea of what a prospective candidate is all about.
The thought of losing out on a dream job due to the nonsense you post on your MySpace page is really enough to keep me away from using it. Although my dream job is to be a Dot Com Mogul and work for myself so maybe that really isn’t such a big deal afterall. I’m still having a hard time believing there is much for me at MySpace though.
Do you have a MySpace page? Please enlighten me on whether I am missing out on anything by not using MySpace or if I have been doing the right thing by just sticking with my narcissistic blog!

Hey-
Thanks for the link back 🙂
Your missing absolutely nothing by not using myspace outside of tons of spam and nothing more. I use it to keep in touch with less than 24 people and for that, Myspace is not even worth it.

Myspace has turned into a wonderful network tool for many . . . as a cyber nightclub to flirt with others. Although I do keep a profile to refer some people to my blog and have a forum for some fans (of the shows I work on) to reach me.
But yes, it only seems to benefit the hot and the beautiful to feed their egotistical needs.

You guys have confirmed that I am not really missing anything by not using MySpace. The only thing I would have any interest in is using it to try and generate some more traffic to my site but I prefer to spend my time visiting other blogs and commenting there.

I would say not missing anything. You might get some people from your old high school that you don’t want to talk to anyway.
About all I use it for is for my Band

Lol, oddly enough my close group of friends are all people I was friends with in high school.
I’ll have to check out your band page from home tonight, what kind of music do you guys play? Any band t-shirts? You can take me on my t-shirt whore campaign! 🙂

The strange area between hard rock and heavy metal. We just got a new singer on board and should have merch available in the next few months. Keep in touch…

Cool, that is my preferred genre of music with a lean more towards the heavy side depending on the day so I hope you guys have some samples of your work on your page.

you know what you gotta realize is that bloggers like you and me are like myspace users on a whole different level . . . the promote their own pages just like how we promote ours . . . they just do it in the confinements of myspace because of their limited web skills . . . imagine if they took the time to learn wordpress . . .

I have a mySpace account which I never use… you’re really not missing out. It’s better if you just concentrate on your site instead.

You can just create an accound and don’t do anything with it. After some time will pass, your account will have such PR. I think you know what you could do with it. 🙂

Not a bad idea at all, thanks!

I tend to agree with you derek. I think myspace is for a younger crowd. You mentioned Facebook, have you tried looking into that? It’s a little more sedate and less hyper-active. Let me know what you think.

I haven’t really looked at Facebook much either – LinkedIn has been the one that I have used the most.

I heard something like 20% of myspace was spam. Alot of people use myspace for marketing its become a sort of wasteland. Not really fun anymore.

Just my opinion but myspace is played out and pretty much pointless. I hav’nt touched my profile in like a year mainly because I see no reason to. It has an annoying interface and way to many spammers lol.

I think so. I use myspace, i’d love to say but not much but i’d be lying… I can’t keep away from it, it’s just so cool, keeping in touch with friends in such a simple and fun way. Facebook confuses me to no end though, i really don’t like it.

Very cool of you guys to show this love. It’s funny: everybody’s on Firefox’s side, it seems! A win for them is definitely a win for OSS in general, I suppose, but it nonetheless surprises me to see such widespread support.
