8 Oddities About Derek Semmler

by derek on July 7, 2007 · 23 comments

Last week I was tagged by Leo Chiang to participate in a meme designed to learn a few fun facts about one another. While I am not so sure that I have 8 fun facts about myself, I felt it was best to participate since Leo is a ninja and I’ve also been tagged by Shawn Knight so I don’t want to disappoint anyone.
Rules To Follow

  • Each player must post these rules first.
  • Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
  • People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
  • At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
  • Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

8 Oddities About Myself

  1. I once worked in a cemetery.
  2. My wife and I lived in the same apartment complex as infants but did not know each other.
  3. I have three tattoos and three piercings.
  4. My max bench press is currently 340 pounds – I’m proud of this as I am by no means an athlete.
  5. I love hot and spicy food. Just about everything I eat has hot sauce added and I am now dabbling in making my own sauce.
  6. I’m not a big fan of entertaining at my home or meeting new people. I’m a very shy person.
  7. Given a choice, I would choose a chunk of cheese over any dessert (candy, ice cream, etc.) every day of the week.
  8. I’ve lived in the same area (roughly 25 mile radius) my entire life except for when I was in college and had my own apartment.
  9. When I was less than a year old, I spilled an entire cup of coffee on my arm and still have scars on my shoulder to this day.

You’ll notice that I actually listed nine items there but that’s just because I like to go above and beyond expectations, plus I was feeling a little guilty about taking more than a week to complete this post. Unfortunately the facts aren’t exactly exciting but they are what I’ve got for you.

No problem, sorry it took me so long. If only I had more interesting facts to share, lol.

I did get a laugh out of this line:
but that’s just because I like to go above and beyond expectations
Are you saying that the rest of us are slackers because we followed the rules! πŸ˜›

Lol, it’s more like my 8 facts weren’t all that fun or interesting so I had to add a 9th.

I’m sure there are more than 8 for me…how will I choose?? πŸ™‚

Melanie, you can just be like me and go “above and beyond” the expectations. πŸ˜†

There you go again pointing out that I have been slacking in the post frequency department. Don’t make me leave another random comment containing the “s” word…LOL. Ok, I’m in but it might take me a while to post it πŸ˜‰

Chris, I’m trying to light a fire under you because you turn out some great content (when you actually post that is). πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the good word…you also have a great thing going on over here. The thing I like best is that you talk about normal everyday topics that many people can connect with. It’s like water cooler talk that actually makes you think.
As I read through this post again I caught #5. I am the same way…I will add hot sauce to just about anything. My wife and kids think I’m crazy…but it’s almost addictive for me.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate the comment!
Do you have a favorite sauce? I like to experiment with new sauces and try all different sorts of flavors and heat levels.

I have been kind of hooked on Cholula Hot Sauce as of late. Not too crazy but adds a nice amount of heat. I have also recently been addicted to putting crushed red pepper on just about everything. My wife got me Dave’s Insanity a while back…now were talking πŸ™‚

derek July 16, 2007 at 11:17 pm

Scary…Cholulua is one that I almost always have on hand as it has a really nice flavor but isn’t overpowering. Although I am currently out of it and have it on the shopping list.
In my opinion, my only complaint with sauces like Dave’s Insanity is they are usually just about the heat and lack any real flavor. I’d rather have a more powerful flavor with a little less heat than something that just tries to pack as much heat as possible while sacrificing flavor.

Chris Gray July 17, 2007 at 10:39 pm

It’s kind of funny…my son actually started a Cholulua bottle collection (something about the wooden caps I guess).
Your right about Dave’s though…it’s not your everyday “put it on everything” sauce. I only break it out for special occasions. Nothing like sweating through dinner though!

derek July 17, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Lol, that is too funny. After posting last night I actually found a spare bottle of Cholula in a different cabinet. Score!

I keep getting tagged for this meme and one day I will get around to completing it. In the meantime, I love reading the ones other people do.
“My wife and I lived in the same apartment complex as infants but did not know each other.”
That is insane romantic and if you ever have the time, you could probably pitch an awesome screenplay hinging off that story.

Lol, that would be pretty funny. My Mom tells a story that when we lived in that apartment complex, there was a girl a little older than me that had jumped on me one day at the playground. To this day I kid my wife that she was that girl since we did both live there and she was a little older than me, lol.
The funny thing is that for all we know, it could actually be true. Hmm, maybe I should start writing a script!
