Critique My Theme

by derek on July 17, 2007 · 16 comments

How often have you changed the theme on your blog?
Since I started this blog, I’ve stuck with the same theme from the beginning. Every now and then I have had thoughts of changing my theme but then I question what my reasons are for changing the theme and I end up sticking with what I have now.
With the helpful community that has been growing here, I thought that I would turn to all of you to gather your feedback on my current theme. As the owner/operator, I’ve developed my own thoughts and feelings about my theme and I want to see how that blends with the thoughts from all of you.
Please take a moment and answer the following poll:

[poll=3]

In addition to the questions in the poll, I sincerely hope you will provide any additional feedback on questions such as:

  • What do you like about my current theme?
  • What don’t you like?
  • If you could change just one thing about my theme, what would it be?
  • Is there anything that you do not want to see changed?

Now that you’ve had a chance to answer the poll and provide additional insight on the questions above, I’d like to extend my thanks and appreciation for taking the time to share your feedback! 🙂

Yeah, you need a new header. It looks like a car blog when clearly, it is much more 😉

I think you should run a contest and the winner gets to design/choose your next theme 😈

Needs a new header, but otherwise ok.

I’m also in agreeance. The theme looks fine, but the header with the tC comes off as slightly cheesy in my opinion (sorry, I’m a designer by nature).

@Stephen :: Thanks for the feedback. When I first started the blog I thought I would post more about my car and cars in general but I’ve been pretty light on that topic.
@Chris :: Nice idea although I would have to retain final control over the design.
@Erik :: Thanks for the feedback!
@Dave :: No need to apologize, that is exactly the type of feedback that I was hoping to get. Being a designer by nature, do you have any ideas/suggestions? 🙂

How about a contest to design the best replacement header. Dave mentioned that he is a designer…you may have some takers.

To be completely honest, this theme is kinda plain – there is nothing eye catching or memorable about it…

@Chris :: I’m trying to see if I can come up with something as a new header but a contest might not be bad. I plan on contacting Dave as well to inquire on his thoughts and interest in designing a header.
@Saman :: No need to hide, I appreciate the honesty. The theme is kind of plain but I have to admit that I am as well – not a flashy person by any means. I’m going to experiment with a new header to see if that makes it any more memorable before making any radical changes.

No worries man…I was just throwing out some random ideas…to stir it up some. This is of course your blog after all 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you come up with! I too am contemplating a redesign in the near future…thinking about moving to a three column layout. We’ll see if I get some time 🙁
Congrats again on the digg. Are you still seeing a decent amount of traffic rolling in?

The only reason that I mention it is that there are 93.4 million blogs out there and it’s getting more difficult to stand out from the crowd!

@Chris :: As I expected, the day after the digg still had quite a bit of traffic (about 5000 uniques) but it has been returning to normal levels.
@Saman :: That’s true. Once I can get the header redesigned and see how that is for awhile, I’ll begin to think about the rest of the theme.

As for me, i find your time neat. Maybe the only missing are pics to further describe your article that to some might be not to clear to picture out. But your articles are really great.
