Wow!
Today has been an exciting and somewhat nerve-racking day to say the least. My post yesterday on the exploding CD made it to the front page of digg and my traffic exploded right along with the CD.
I was in an all-day meeting at work today and returned to see that the post had gone from about 36 diggs to over 600 diggs and I had over 10,000 visitors to the site.
Unfortunately, while in the meeting I had received an email from my hosting company that they were suspending my account due to the large spike in CPU usage and requested an explanation. Once I was back and saw the email, I promptly responded to support and the account has been reinstated as of right now.
I apologize to everyone that came here looking for my ramblings but received the account suspension notice instead. Hopefully things have settled down a little bit and we will be a bit more stable. I’d like to take a moment to thank the guys over at BlueFur hosting for the quick turnaround once I explained the cause of the spike.
For those that are new to the site, I’d like to take a moment to welcome you and invite you to subscribe to my full-feed RSS feed to keep up-to-date on what is going on here. Please jump in with your thoughts and feedback and welcome to the community!

I’ll be back later tonight with more details on the digg and what that has meant to me! 🙂

congrats on the digging, let me digg it as well lol
Wow, that’s an incredible traffic spike. I wonder if my site is “Digg-Ready” … probably not 😛
Is this spike something that you’ll have to look out for in the future if something is heavily digged? Or will BlueFur keep your site up but send you another warning?
Awesome news…congrats man. 10,000 readers, that’s insane!!!!
@IWT :: Thanks – the more the merrier! 🙂
@Jason :: I am blown away by the traffic and how well BlueFur has handled everything. Once I got in touch with them after the initial suspension they had it all back up and running real quick and I am really impressed.
@Chris :: Thanks, I’ll be posting another update soon as the traffic keeps rolling in.
Wicked! Feel the DIGG Love! 😉
Thanks Stephen!
I was wondering how the site would handle the traffic after I saw 800+ diggs! Good to see that WordPress held up, seems to be a lot of site’s WordPress or MySQL choke when they get that muck traffic!
Ed Lau experienced a digg using BlueFur as his host and didn’t have any problems. Had I been around when they first contacted me, I’m sure my site would not have been down for long either.
I’m really impressed with how well they handled the digg.
I have to check them out, I’m sick and tired of my current host…
Using the discount code of “johnchowrocks” (from what I remember it had to be lower-case) for 15% off the price you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal.
I need to talk to Gary and see if I can’t get a “DerekSemmlerRocks” promo code, lol! 😀
You should! Why not get paid for promoting them?!
You know you owe it all to me, Derek 😉
Absolutely! 😀
Congrats on the Digg! when one of my sites was unexpectantly dugg i ran out of bandwidth in half a day! …im now a bit better prepared 🙂
Thanks! Throughout all of the excitement, it has also been a learning experience.
Congrats on the Digg. I’ve never cracked double figures myself! 😛
Thanks, I had been in the same boat with a few other posts that had just a couple of votes. It was quite the experience!
How did wordpress handle it? I’ve heard it can struggle. Do you have the WP cache plugin installed?
I don’t have WP cache installed and other than a hiccup where my hosting provider suspended my account until I explained the cause of the CPU spike, everything was handled just fine.
Let that be a lesson to you 😛 Never post anything ‘exploding’ to Digg or the same thing will happen to your traffic xD
Wow, that’s a lot of traffic in one go. Digg is the place to be!
Wow, the most diggs ive ever had is 3 rofl. I guess i have to find some really unique things.
That’s amazing getting that many Diggs – it’s made me toy with the idea of just making something up to get hits!
Bit like the ‘Best Customer Complaint Letter’ that Oliver Beale sent to Richard Branson of Virgin, it’s ended up an Internet crazy and made it on to the BBC News last night!
If its the first you’ve heard of this letter, its on my blog at my website.
Now, just going back to thinking of something outrageous to get Digg’d……
Ho do you get lots of Diggs from Digg? The most Diggs i’ve ever had is 4!
Well don on getting loads of Diggs though.
Nice one, its impossible for me to even get anywhere near that. i just suck lol
