What To Do After Being Dugg

by derek on July 19, 2007 · 51 comments

Have you ever had one of those moments that is so exciting that your knees get a little weak and you feel sick to your stomach?
I’ve had a few such moments in my life and today was one of them.
When I came back from a meeting and checked my stats to see that I had received over 10,000 visitors and my post on the exploding CD had over 600 diggs I was absolutely elated. Then I punched up my site and was greeted with a notice that my account was suspended due to an unexplained spike in CPU usage – oh, not so good but somehow it was still exciting to be a *victim* of digg.
After a quick email to BlueFur to explain that the huge spike in CPU usage was a result of being dugg, they had my account back up and running in no time. Thanks guys!

Digg Visitors

Right now I’ve had over 16,000 visitors and have 800 diggs. Naturally my first thought was about what I need to do now with all of the traffic that is coming into my site.
I’ve read numerous articles on things to do and not do after being dugg. While there are many different ideas and opinions on what to do, I thought this would be a great time to have a little contest for those in the community!
Contest! Easy to Win!
While I would love to say that I have a free iPhone or something really cool to give away, I would be lying to you.
Not to say that these prizes aren’t really cool though!
I’ll be giving away two t-shirts and a crazy little stress squeeze toy to three lucky winners. These aren’t just any t-shirts though as you will see below. One shirt is an authentic ShoeMoney t-shirt and the other is a coveted flippingrich.com t-shirt.

ShoeMoney and FlippingRich T-Shirt Contest

Note: There are two ShoeMoney shirts pictured :: one is a mens t-shirt and one is a womens babydoll t-shirt. The winners can pick which one they want.
Contest Rules
All you have to do to enter the contest is reply to this post in the comments. Only one reply per customer – well, you can reply as many times as you want but I am only counting one reply.
However, you can get a 2nd entry if you blog about this contest and send a trackback to this post.
Since this digg experience started on a Wednesday, you have until next Wednesday (July 25th) to enter and I will throw all of the names in a hat and pick the three lucky winners. No matter where you are in the world, I will ship the prizes to you.
Good luck everyone!

No kidding – I need to create my own squeeze toys!

The squeeze toy is great! Who wants to squeeze a basketball or a fake golf ball when you could be squishing that poor sap’s noggin?
The ShoeMoney shirt is pretty sweet-looking too.

Well congrats on being dugg. It’s nice that something good came out of that mess. lol Did you ever call the company?

Congrats on getting Dugg. I had a feeling it was only a matter of time. You better think about upgrading your bandwidth limits, I think you’re going to get dugg again 🙂

Ah, the Digg effect!
Yes, it will bring you lots of traffic for a while. Now it’s your job to keep it up 😉
Congrats!

I have yet to experience being a victim of Digg, but it seems like it would be a good problem to have. Sort of like having so much money you don’t know what to do with it.

I haven’t either, and I’m not looking forward to a brief explosion of traffic that kills the site and doesn’t remain….

Those squeeze dolls are awesome, no I really mean it! My kids would love those things.

I`m sorry, but I´m not familiar to the “Digg thing”. Anyhow, if my stats (100/daily or something) raised to 10.000, (that’s not even possible) I´m sure I would feel like you did, but I don´t have the right kind of contents that could please so many visitors’ palate.
However, those T-shirts are amusing, but wouldn´t fit me. I´m a grandmother and I´m supposed to wear “The-World´s greatest-grandmother-T-shirts”, or something like that. Although I would like to give it to my youngest grandchild.

Congrats on being dugg. I’ve had content that has brought in thousands of visitors from reddit, stumbleupon and delicious but has drawn nothing more than a big yawn from digg. I guess each community has its own hot buttons.

Which source can bring more traffic? Being Dugg, or the John Chow effect?
I doubt my site will ever be the recipient from either, but it would be an interesting comparison 😛

Saman Sadeghi July 22, 2007 at 1:37 pm

Digg would bring way more traffic, but the visitors don’t stay – StumbleUpon is more creates more steady traffic!

First of all, congrats! That is an amazing accomplishment to get that many diggs. It shows you have a well-rounded perspective of what to say and how to say it (the pictures were huge as well I am sure).
What is further amazing to me is how the content of the article is not your typical “digg” content. It’s just a guy talking about a day in the life. of course, a tech element made it quite diggable, but i think it’s a good lesson that the daily events we blog about can interest a wide array of readers. Good job Derek! Keep it up.

@Jason :: That is a great question! I’ve had an experience of a minor John Chow effect when I won the Lego flash drive but that was nowhere near the digg effect. But I think getting a full-blown review or something on John’s site might be more competitive.
@Damien :: I’m sure the pictures really helped and I too was surprised that it received as much attention on digg as it did. Thanks for the comment and encouragement Damien!

I can always use a new shirt. I just got finished entering 5 contest last week – and I have not posted a related post to my blog sense. Should I go against my word to my readers of not entering more contest through a blog post until I get some real information posted on my blog?
Thoughts, comments?

I cannot help you with the t-shirts but I did find the company that made the squeeze toys, unfortunately I cannot recall the name or link right now. When I get to the office on Thursday, I will look on that computer as I think I saved it there.
