Where's Waldo :: Connect With Derek

by derek on March 28, 2008 · 12 comments

Since I missed an opportunity to attend an IBM sponsored event tonight at ESPN SportsZone due to a late night at work, I thought it would be a good time to do a little networking online.
I’ve finally taken the plunge and signed up for a Facebook account. Some of you may have friend requests waiting for you, as I have been searching through looking for familiar faces.
However, I realize that not everyone is on Facebook – although it does feel like I was the last person to sign up for an account. I thought that it would be fun to share where you can connect with me away from the blogs, as I always love to connect with people and learn more about them.
There are some tools that I have yet to sign up for, such as twitter, but you can find me at the following sites – pick your favorite and be sure to say hello.

Where’s Waldo Derek?

  • Facebook – trying to find my way around
  • Twitter – just signed up and started tweeting
  • LinkedIn – mostly work people but feel free to say hello
  • StumbleUpon – can easily spend too much time here
  • Sphinn – you can learn so much just reading here
  • MyBlogLog – am I the only one not liking the new interface?
  • BlogCatalog – don’t do too much here to be honest
  • Youtube – home of my video tutorials
  • digg – try to check it out daily
  • del.icio.us – don’t use this as much as I should
  • Technorati – is this still relevant?

How do you find the time? I have simply given up on all networking sites, six to which I had been pulled in by well wishers. I do not miss anything. If anything, my being in touch with people through yahoo groups and email besides instant messaging and free international skype calls, etc have increased.

It is very difficult to keep up with so many sites. I think I’ll start by reading sphinn.

@HRS :: Finding the time to keep current with all of them is the challenge, as a result many of them become spots to check on a somewhat irregular basis.
@pauletet :: I try to devote time each day to visiting my favorite blogs to say hello (which is also hard to do) and hit my favorite social media sites to see what is going on. It can be a full-time job in itself just to try and keep up with everything.
@Nicole :: Sphinn is a really great resource as there are so many brilliant Internet marketers, SEO, etc. over there and you truly can learn a lot just reading the articles that are submitted.

Neat idea (as usual 😉 You might consider replacing your MBL recent visitors widget with the new Blog Catalog “communities” widget that has a neat litle icon for all those services and a direct link to your account. You can see it in my sidebar. But I thnk your post idea is great. Let me know if you get a lot of new subscribers to those services through it. Are you on Twtter yet? (he he he I keep buggin you about new stuff when you have no time I know)

I’ll have to check out the “communities” widget. As for Twitter, no I haven’t signed up yet and have been somewhat reluctant to do so due to the time involvement. However, with an upcoming blogging conference, I have been thinking about signing up before that so I can use it then.
I’ve also been meaning to give EntreCard a try but haven’t done that one yet either.

Derek I really enjoy your content so I don’t mind following your links and joining you.
I don’t have a Digg account anymore. I made about 6 Diggs, all in my opinion were not worth banning me for, but they banned me and have not responded to any emails.
As for Facebook. I haven’t seen a lot of action there other than from a few close friends sending me goofy things for my Wall.

I’ve used Digg and Delicious but the only one in your list that I regularly visit is Facebook.
I’m too long in the tooth to worry about the “my friends list is bigger than yours” syndrome and I have rediscovered some old school friends who I last spoke with 20 years ago. That in itself has made it worthwhile.
The downside are the daily random requests from so called “friends” that you don’t know from Adam. How do they find you on there? Very frustrating.
