Blogging For Money :: March 2008

by derek on April 2, 2008 · 25 comments

The challenge that I set forth for myself in March was to reach a new all-time high in terms of blog earnings. While I fell short of that goal by less than $40.00, I am happy to say that I surpassed my numbers from last month.
In an effort to continue working towards my goal of $1000+ per month, I explored the addition of a new monetization tool and made a few tweaks to existing tools.

Dollars and Cents

In an effort to provide as much value to you as possible, I like to share the nuts and bolts of the tools that I have been using to help give you a picture of which tools might be a good fit for your blog. Through this feedback we can all build more successful blogs together.

Here is the Blogging For Money recap for March:

  • AdSense:
  • Kontera:
  • ReviewMe:
  • TextLinkAds:
  • Amazon:
  • LinkWorth:
  • Private Ads:
  • Affiliate:
  • PayPerPost:
  • Misc:
  • Grand Total:
  • $109.74
  • $14.49
  • $0.00
  • $262.72
  • $1.94
  • $103.53
  • $159.00
  • $1.20
  • $0.00
  • $0.00
  • $652.62

One of the most exciting milestones for me was that March represented the first time that I have ever earned more than $100.00 with AdSense in one single month. I’d come close a couple of months ago but I finally crossed that hurdle and it felt great.
TextLinkAds continued to improve, resulting in over $250 earnings. It will be a challenge to squeeze more money out of this resource as my number of links are at the maximum, although there are still RSS ad spots available.
While it might not seem like a big deal, I was actually pretty happy to see my whopping $1.94 earned through Amazon. There was one post where I targeted an Amazon product placement and it resulted in a few transactions. This may not pan out moving forward but it was exciting to see a little life there.

Plans for April

With the tax season behind me, I can relax a little bit about the fact that these reports detail my earnings on an accrual basis while I pay my taxes on a cash basis.
Now it is time to focus my efforts into kicking my earnings up another notch and take another step closer to the goal of surpassing $1000 per month.
The first stepping stone towards that goal will be to surpass my previous all-time high and earn more than $700.00 in the month of April. There are a few new things that I plan on testing this month and I believe that can push me over the edge.
As a thank you to all of you for helping grow this blog and my earnings, I will be making an announcement in the next couple of days that will hopefully give you a chance for a little more exposure and add to your bottom line.

Your figures are more believable than the chaps who say they’re on $20,000 a month, and you can be too.

It’s inching up there, but at least it’s moving! I’m positive you’ll hit your $1,000 mark soon.

Congrats! Funny how you have one of your best months with adsense, because some people were complaining that Adsense was not doing great in March.

Hey Derek, congrats on the earnings! Is that all from this blog or do you have a few other sites?

All, thanks for the feedback and words of encouragement!
@Jagdu :: These earnings are a combination between this blog and my personal finance blog, although most of it comes from my PF blog.

Can I have a loan?
Forgive me for not picking up the information elsewhere but I presume you blog in addition to a “proper” job, so the $650 is extra cash? That is impressive.
I have some earnings from affliate maketing but my blogs have only ever got me $1.99 through Widgetbuck (which I no longer use).
Very inspirational.

We can discuss a loan, although you might not like my interest rates. πŸ˜‰
Yes, I do have a “proper” job that provides for my family so the blog earnings are all extra cash – part of which just recently went to cover my registration for the SOBCon event coming up in May.
BTW, welcome to the blog and thanks for jumping right in on the conversation!

Glad to be here Derek, just taking a few minutes to have a look around and see if I can add anything relevant.
You are quoting in dollars so I assume you are in the US. Do you get many visitors from over here in the UK? I find it quite interesting to see if I can narrow down location by writing style or terminology but you almost use the Queen’s English πŸ™‚

Yes, I am in the US.
After a quick look at my Google Analytics, the UK checks in as #3 in terms of visitor location behind the US and Canada.
That is an interesting insight on the writing style, I wonder what others think?

congrats!
$260 from TLA is awesome.
On one site I make only $40, but it comes only from in-post ads and not a single site-wide or rss ad. however on another site, i make $100 from site-wide ads only.
Linkworth is set to become my largest income generator.
I expect to make ~$1000 within 2 months.

@Nicole :: I don’t know that it has subsided but I decided early on that I would just have to face up to the music if it happens to me as I wasn’t going to change anything.
@Eva :: Thanks for the encouragement.
@Jayson :: Thanks, it has been nice to continue building on the momentum and I don’t have any plans of stopping that.
@LoD :: LinkWorth has been great for me and has slowly been inching up the list. They have a few really nice offerings and I have been very happy that I hooked up with them. That is great that you are approaching $1000 with them! Do you have any tips you want to share? πŸ™‚

You’re doing really well man! The blog market is so competitive, I’d reckon that 80%-90% of people blogging for money actually don’t end up profiting. I would bet my assets that you will reach $1000/mo soon!
