Q&A Round 2 :: The Answers

Justin asks:

I don’t know what to ask, but I know what to say. I think you’ve done a great job with monetization and popularization of the blog. How did you do so well so fast? (I guess that’s a question, considering it has a question mark)
Derek: Thank you.
Being so involved, I have to say that it certainly doesn’t feel like it has been fast. But I really believe that the ticket to my success thus far has been consistency and variety. Hmmm, that sounds a little contradictory but let me explain.
In the early stages when there wasn’t any money coming in and I was wondering if I would ever earn anything, I stayed consistent with everything – posting, responding to comments, commenting elsewhere, sharing link love, etc. So many people give up before they begin to earn any money, it is certainly not a get rich quick (or easy) proposition.
When I mention variety, I am referring to the variety of income streams. It wasn’t until I branched out from AdSense that I really began to earn money. You need to always be trying new tools, as I am doing now with Adnet. Some will work, some will not – but you don’t know how they will work for you until you try.

CRM asks:

What should i ask?? hmm oh i have it. if you had one wish what would you wish???
Derek: Well, I was going to say that I would wish for more wishes but Andrea vetoed that response. There are so many things that I would like to wish for, some of them are selfish and others are not. But if I could only have one wish, it would be that my two sons achieve every goal/dream that they ever have for themselves.

Andrea asks:

do you like to cook? if so, what are some of your fav things to grill? ( i say grill cause men like grilling and iirc, you mentioned it too) also, what are some of your favorite “comfort” foods that you enjoy?
me personally, i like i cook steaks with fresh veggies on the side. and as far as comfort food…. i like to say hello to my favorite guys, ben and jerry.
Derek: No, I don’t like to cook. Actually, it isn’t the cooking I mind so much but the process of deciding what to cook is what I don’t like. My kids claim that I make a killer macaroni and cheese though.
As you noted, I do grill more than I cook in the kitchen. I’m not much of a steak person really, I’d prefer a nice grilled chicken breast, pork chop, or something simple like spicy Italian sausages.
Comfort foods, I’m really not much of an ice cream fan although I do have a weakness for Bryers Coffee or Mint Chocolate Chip. My #1 comfort food is cheese – strange I know but it is the truth.

Andrea asks:

i just thought of another one…..are we allowed to ask more than once?
if yes, How are you liking your Mac? What are the pros and cons so far? (for you, not what you have heard from all the apple-haters) Dont forget, if you have any probs/questions, i can help you out or my husband, he is more knowledgeable than i am. πŸ™‚
Derek: Yes, you’re allowed to ask more than once. So far I am really loving my Mac, even though I am still somewhat awkward with it.
Pros: new tools/apps to play with, portability (would be true for any laptop), more peace of mind with regard to virus/hacks, much snappier than my Windows desktop
Cons: lack of experience with new tools often means I jump on the Windows machine to do things, prefer larger screen/keyboard when working at home
As you can see, the cons really are not with the Mac itself but more that I didn’t really buy the Macbook to replace my desktop. I still do all of my finances on the desktop and when I am working at home, I find that I get things done faster on the PC just because I am so familiar with it.

IPO asks:

It is absolutely necessary to work on Monday? Just kidding πŸ™‚ Ok, so who is the better Hulk, Edward Norton or Eric Bana?
Derek: Edward Norton – not even close!

Steve asks:

The other question I was pondering was this….
If we evolved from monkeys, does that mean that God is hairy and eats bananas?
Derek: If we evolved from monkeys, does God even exist?

Michael Kwan asks:

How do you put up with such a lengthy commute to work? I got a little frazzled when I used to commute a mere 15-20 minutes to get to work.
Derek: Sirius Satellite Radio! Before getting Sirius, I lived on a large collection of CDs and sports talk radio. In all honesty, I find the drive to and from work to be pretty relaxing and it offers me a lot of time to think about blog posts.

cory huff asks:

Would you be willing to do a post series on how you monetize so well? Specifically, how you’ve managed to make so much cash even though you don’t have a huge PageRank or an exceptional amount of traffic?
Derek: I’ll certainly consider a series on how I have monetized although I thought that I’ve done a pretty good job of explaining it through the variety of posts here. As I mentioned earlier, it really has boiled down to being consistent with posting and using a variety of tools. Of course the niche makes a big difference as well, with my personal finance site making me the most money.

Steve asks:

What is the meaning of life? πŸ™‚
Derek: Great question – you remember that part when I said I would tell you if I don’t know the answer? πŸ™‚
The meaning of life will be different from person to person, as well as at different times in the same persons life. Right now I would tell you that the meaning of my life is to provide a healthy and happy home for my family, help other people to the best of my abilities, and have fun along the way.

Simon asks:

I am interested in what you think the best way to make money from blogs is? i.e. what are the best banner ads etc to use. Cheers.
Derek: It depends on the blog and the niche. What works well on my personal finance site doesn’t work very well here. It is all about experimenting with different methods of monetization to see what works the best for your blog.

Ling asks:

Umm.. Is the Incredible Hulk worth watching? πŸ™‚
Derek: Yes, I thought it was entertaining. Not as good as Iron Man but certainly better than the previous Hulk, which I fell asleep during.

Shawn Knight asks:

Uhm, what is Ghost in the Graveyard? Don’t recall that game from my childhood…
Derek: I think there are a variety of ways to play and it is known by other names as well.
The way we play is where one person is “it” (the Ghost) and they run off to hide while all of the other players stay at base. Once the ghost is hiding, everyone counts to 12 (usually by time, such as one o’clock, two o’clock…midnight) and then looks for the ghost.
When someone sees the ghost, they yell “Ghost in the graveyard!” and try to run back to base. The ghost attempts to tag everyone before they get back to base. The people that make it back to base count again, now with more ghosts hiding. This continues until the last person is caught by a ghost, who then becomes the first ghost for the next round.
Hope that makes sense, lol.

Futon-Matt asks:

Yeah, I was wondering about the actor change in the Hulk. So which one is better?
Derek: Edward Norton is much better! He is a great actor in my opinion and I found this movie much more entertaining with him as the lead.

Futon-Matt asks:

Meaning? Who said there was one?:)
Derek: Since I randomize the order of questions when I answer them, this is a little out of place since it refers to the question about the meaning of life. Whether there is an overall meaning of life or not, I try to live my life with a certain meaning or purpose.

JLow asks:

What do you think Tony Stark was referring to at the end of Hulk?:)
Derek: From the opening scenes of Hulk when you see a box of weapons stamped with “Stark Industries” to the closing scene with Tony Stark, I was thinking that the next movie will be a huge blockbuster sequel with all of the Marvel comic book heroes.

Nicole Price asks:

What are all the things that you do regularly with your children, with your wife and with all of them together, and how often?
Derek: Great question!
The majority of our time is all spent together, which as great as that is I do think we need to spend more time sharing special time with each child individually and together as a couple.
With my kids, we are always outside playing – baseball, basketball, football, riding bikes, hiking, playing at the park. When I am not at work and the kids are awake, we are doing one of those things. The other thing that we do regularly and that I love is reading.
Individually, I will say that my oldest son and I probably play catch the most. He is a huge baseball nut and plays Little League all summer, which makes his broken wrist pretty hard to adjust to right now. My youngest son and I like to “National Fight” as he calls it, where we act out fight sequences and wrestle around.
My wife and I don’t spend nearly enough time without the kids, which we really need to get better about. Often times it is things like a quiet dinner out, see a movie, go for a walk.

Andrea asks:

Hey Derek, when are you going to answer the questions? do you have a cut off for the questions? ….just wonderin’
Derek: Right now! (laughing at the fact that this question came out last in the random order)

Nice round-up, Derek. I can see that this series is going to get pretty popular around these parts.

Ahaha, lots of questions answered. When I started my puppet podcast, I asked people to send in questions for the characters to answer. My friend asked “what is the meaning of life?” Unfortunately I never got to it cuz I couldn’t come up with a good response (one that would be entertaining and within budget at the same time anyway).

Check out this post for the details of that story.

simon@Free Vector Clip Art June 20, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Cheers Derek, I know what your saying about needing to experiment to find out what works best for your blog. Blogs about online stuff, blogging, social media, web master type stuff I have found it easy to get plenty of hits, but not so easy to make any money from the traffic.

Great stuff derek, thanks for answering them!

Ling@Uptake June 21, 2008 at 12:23 am

Thanks for the answer, but you’re too late, cause I already saw the Hulk. And you’re right. Its good, but not as good as Iron-Man, which really rocked.

The days when kids spent all their time outside, much fun!

It seems that Derek has been thrown with a lot of questions:)

Justin@Airsoft Guns June 23, 2008 at 9:08 am

Wow, I’m so honored to be the first one who’s question was answered! This must be what it feels like to win an Emmy.

Futon-Matt June 23, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Nice answer about the meaning of life! Though, most of the time people ask about the meaning of life it tends to be in reference to some grand scheme. I agree about the living with integrity and purpose.
Cool to the hulk as well, maybe I’ll rent it when it comes out.

Andrew Reynolds June 23, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Derek, it seems that you got tons of questions. And it’s interesting to know more facts and bits of information about you.

Larry @ Commercial Lighting July 15, 2008 at 8:33 am

I have to disagree with your Edward Norton Hulk… Lou Ferrigno is hands down the best hulk.

derek July 15, 2008 at 10:29 am

I’d agree with you there, I was just referring to the two latest Hulk movies that have been released. It was funny seeing Lou with a small part in the most recent movie.

kouji@haiku poems examples October 12, 2008 at 5:24 am

i’m fascinated by the fact that you were able to monetize well without having to worry as much about pagerank and traffic. will have to look for your articles on how you did this.
