Q&A Round 4 :: The Answers

by derek on August 15, 2008 · 25 comments

Marie @ Neon Signs asks:

For what price would you sell this blog for?
Derek: As Nicole had mentioned, I’ve answered that question previously so please take a look here.

Jay asks:

Wouldn’t it have made a little more sense to ask him a price via contact rather than a comment?
Derek: Jay, given the spirit of the Q&A Session, I didn’t take the question to be of a serious inquiry to buy this blog so a comment works just fine.

Eva White asks:

Who is the most important person in the world to you?
Derek: Wow…that is a really interesting question and I am not sure that I can narrow it down to just one person.
The most important people in the world to me are my wife and two kids. Clearly I cannot say that one of them is any more important than the other, as they each hold an equal level of importance to me.
If you’re going to make me pick just one person though, I am going to sound conceited and say myself. The reason that I say that is because if I don’t take care of myself, I will not be here to share in the lives of the people that are the most important to me. That might seem strange to some people but I would never want my kids to grow up without their dad around and I wouldn’t want to lose my best friend and wife, so I like to think I am pretty important, lol.

Marie @ Neon Signs asks:

When is Steve going to do a guest blog so I can get some freebies!
Derek: Steve has already provided me with a guest post! Now it is just a matter of me finding the time to prepare it for publishing and get it out there. However, there are no guarantees (at least not from me) on the ability to get freebies.

Desmond@Prooxie.com asks:

What is your main marketing method for this blog?
Derek: Hmm, word of mouth. Up until my recent ad purchase through the PerformancingAds service, I had not really spent any money marketing this blog. Instead I have tried to do my best to do things like comment on other blogs, share copious amounts of link love, stay active (and helpful) on social media sites. Considering that the monthly numbers have been steadily improving, I’d say it has been working pretty well so far.

Larry @ Commercial Lighting asks:

In round two you said sirius gets you through your morning commute. What station do you listen to?
Derek: In all the time that I have had Sirius, I think I’ve listened to about four channels, lol. On most mornings, you’ll find me tuned into the Howard Stern show. While I know a lot of people cannot stand him, I find the show to be entertaining on most days. However, some mornings I am in the mood for music and my choice there had traditionally been Octane 20.
Lately, I have been addicted to Left Of Center, which is their channel for indie, underground and import music. I’ve been exposed to such a variety of music on this channel and I am really digging it. The only other channel or show that I tune in for is the Covino and Rich Show on Maxim Radio.

Ling@Uptake asks:

Will you still be blogging 10 years from now? Ever thought about what you’ll be doing in 10 years?
P.S.: Sorry bout the double question. 🙂
Derek: Obviously I cannot say for sure but I’d like to believe that I will still be involved with blogging, or whatever that evolves into, in ten years. The Interweb is a passion of mine and is something that I thoroughly enjoy being involved with, so it is hard for me to imagine it not being a part of my life.
While I don’t necessarily look at what I will be doing in 10 years specifically, I have a target date for an early retirement at the age of 52 and that is the mark that I focus on the most.

Eva White asks:

What is your favourite holiday destination?
Derek: Well, we don’t ever really travel during the holidays. Most of my family is within a 15-20 minute drive of one another and my wife’s dad is just as close. Holidays are a time that we spend with our family, so that usually means driving across town as opposed to traveling somewhere.
Looking beyond holidays, we haven’t really traveled much but the place that has been our favorite would have to be the Smoky Mountains. We love to spend the day in the National Park hiking the trails and exploring. Later this year we will be making a trip to Disney World, which I am sure willl be a hit with everyone.

Nicole Price asks:

What is your take on Family Values in today’s world?
Derek: Honestly, I cannot say that I give the idea of “Family Values” much thought. While I certainly have an opinion of what the “family values” should be within my own house, I don’t think that is necessarily inline with what the traditional thoughts would be in our culture.

Andrea asks:

I hope I am not too late on this!!!!
What is the last movie you went and saw at the theater and what is your review on it?
Derek: The last movie that I saw in the theater was The Dark Knight. It was a father/son trip with my oldest and we both loved the movie. While I know this isn’t a full blown review, I will say that the movie was fantastic; although I didn’t think it really lived up to the hype that had been given to it surrounding Heath Ledger’s performance. It was certainly worth the price of admission though.

Futon-Matt asks:

I see that your page rank went back up after this last update. Did you stop posting about the methods you use to monetize your blog? Or did some other factor contribute to the raised pr?
One of my blogs got hit a couple updates back after I put a banner on the site.
Derek: As you can see from my most recent monetization update, I am still posting about the methods that I am using and where I am having success (as well as failures). While the PR for this blog is still off from the original PR4, I did get a little bit of the ranking back as it moved up to PR3. My other blog is still a victim of the drop in PR though. Since I haven’t changed any of my practices, I am not sure that I can explain how/why the ranking went back up.

Nicole Price asks:

This was already asked earlier and Derek’s answer is a classic. You should have a look at the archives.
Derek: While this isn’t a question, I wanted to leave it in here just to say thanks for helping out your fellow community members and directing them to a post where they can find the answer!

Jeremy (Discovering Dad) asks:

Do you have a specific plan for how you market your blog to increase subscribers and page views? I know everyone says content is kind, and I agree, but what do you specifically do beyond write great posts that has worked well?
Derek: To move to the next level of blogging, I really should have a specific plan but unfortunately I don’t right now. As I said earlier, my strategy has simply been to try my best to participate on other blogs and build a reputation as someone that is willing to lend a helping hand. The marketing of my blogs is certainly an area that I need to improve upon though.

Steve@Free iPods asks:

Do you worry about having to look after ageing parents, or do you have other family members to share the load?
(Don’t answer if too personal, it’s just that my wife and I are both the only children around to look after our mums right now and I am intrigued how many others are in a similar boat)
Derek: It is not something that I worry about, although it is a real possibility. On my side of the family, I have an older sister and we live within a few miles of each other. Our parents are about 15 miles away, so when that time comes I think we will be able to handle the load of providing any necessary care. On my wife’s side of the family, her dad lives near us as well but she is the only child and there is no other family in the area. So that is a situation where we would carry the full load on our own.

Marie @ Neon Signs asks:

I didn’t know you had multiple blogs…whats are the other ones?
Derek: Yes, I have two other primary blogs: My New Choice and The Man Page.

Kelvin Kao@Puppet Kaos asks:

As an author of multiple blogs, how do you decide which post goes up on which blog? If there’s a post that looks like it might work for either blogs, what do you do? If you seperate them by topics, do you feel like a part of you is missing from one blog and vice versa?
Also, is there a difference between checking “Subscribe to comments via email” and “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail”?
Derek: Fortunately, each of my blogs is different enough that there hasn’t been too much overlap. The one area that this has happened is when I post about finances on The Man Page, as that is the main focus of My New Choice. With the separation of topics, I don’t really think that part of me is missing from any one blog. Instead I look at it like a conversation with a different group of people. For instance, if I am in a setting with people that don’t enjoy sports, I am not going to ramble on and on about sports. Rather than think of it as a part of me is missing, I focus on the parts of me that are relevant to the discussion at hand.
As for the question about the “Subscribe” and “Notify” boxes, I believe that they will both work the same. They are two different plugins, one of which is included in the threaded comments that are used on this blog. It could probably be cleaned up to remove one of them, I just haven’t done it.

Marie @ Neon Signs asks:

well jay, I wasn’t looking to buy it, I just wanted to know what he felt the worth was, but like the other poster said..it was already addressed. I personally feel it would be invaluable due to all the great content and commenter participation Derek encourages. Maybe the next John Chow?
Derek: Nah, not the the next John Chow…the one and only Derek Semmler – that is how I like to look at it.

Eva White asks:

Who is your idol?
Derek: Hmm, I am not sure that I really have an idol. That word just doesn’t strike a chord with me. Role models, yes. Idols, not so much. When I think of my role models, I immediately think of my dad and my Opa. Maybe I put too much into the word “idol” but that really isn’t my thing.

Andrea asks:

Oh and one more thing….
Do you ever get tired of blogging? Ever just go in phases like you like to then one week you dont?
Derek: Yes…well, I am not sure it is tired of blogging but tired of coming up with interesting ideas and topics for posts. That is evident on my personal finance blog, as I have really let that blog slide as I just haven’t had the time or motivation lately to keep that blog updated with fresh content. Maintaining three blogs has been a bit too much to handle and trying to keep them all updated can really burn me out. I’ve actually given thought to trying to partner with someone to author the finance blog, something like a revenue share or whatever but I haven’t pursued that yet. If anyone is interested, let me know though.

I love Left of Center, it has a lot of variety and more new music than you hear on other stations. You might also want to check out 21, Alt Nation, and 24, ’90s rock, if you like Octane.

Alt Nation is on my presets, as is BuzzSaw, Hard Attack, Lithium (which is the 90’s rock channel 24), 1st Wave, Maxim and the two Howard channels.
But LoC has been my primary choice lately, listening to MGMT – Kids right now. 🙂
They had been playing Elbow fairly regularly but I haven’t heard them in quite some time and I was liking their music. Good stuff!

MGMT is one of my favorite new bands. Had to buy their album and put it on my iPhone. I just got a iPhone dock for my truck today so it will be competing with Sirius for play time.

Yeah, I had suspicions (as did many people) that he was back on the drugs but I am glad that he has come clean about it and is trying to get better.

You know, these Q&A’s of yours are becoming kinda fascinating. Before, I just used to read the answers to my questions, but now I’ve started reading all the qestions and answers.

That is great to hear and is one of the reasons why I have enjoyed them so much as well.

You being the most important person in your life is the most profound statement that I have come across in the recent past. This is so true but sadly misunderstood, if that is the way to put it. Most people would mistake it for being selfish, whereas it is anything but. That was a nice answer to a difficult question.
Thank you for leaving my answer in place.

Yeah, you understood the exact point that I was trying to make. I was concerned that it would be misunderstood but didn’t want to hold it back.

Great questions and answers Derek. I appreciate you sharing both technical and personal information. Before I forget, and if it doesn’t make it I understand, I’ve got my question for the next round:
“Which blog do you enjoy writing for more – The Man Page or your personal site? Which blog gives you greater personal satisfaction?”
I know it’s kind of a loaded question, and I’m sure you enjoy them both or you wouldn’t do it. I’m just interested to know your motivation for doing multiple blogs.

This is totally cool – it really is taking interaction with your users to a new level 0 one that I can only assume is pretty unique as I have not come across this level of communication on any other blogs.

As I noted in the first edition of this series, I stole the idea from Shoemoney. Now it has become a monthly feature here on this blog so stay tuned for next month!

Hey this is a pretty good Q&A.
It has inspired me to come up with some revealing questions for next month.
BTW: I was pretty sure I was your idol. Do you want to re-think your answer to that one?

Reply

derek August 18, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Lol, I’ll just delete your questions. You lost idol status in my book when you couldn’t bench press more than 200 pounds!

Derek: Nah, not the the next John Chow…the one and only Derek Semmler – that is how I like to look at it.
Derek- Thats a great outlook! I do truly feel that this blog will be considered and major player in the blogsphere like it or not.
Thanks again
