Blogging For Money :: August 2008

by derek on September 9, 2008 · 28 comments

Two steps forward, one step backward. That is how I have felt lately when it comes to my efforts to blog for money. After the progress that had been made last month, I have had a small step backward in the month of August.
While the total numbers may have decreased, there were some encouraging signs that certain streams of income are making a strong rebound. August also brought the return of an income stream that had been dormant for quite some time, as well as the introduction of a brand new income stream. Not everything was encouraging though, as other income streams continued their downward trend.

Dollars and Cents

One of the reasons that I enjoy blogging so much is because it provides an opportunity to help other people. There are many ways that this can be done, one of which is through the sharing of knowledge. For that reason, I encourage you to review the tools that I use to make money online and ask me questions about my experiences. While I do not claim to have all of the answers, you can be sure that I will try my best to help you out.

Here is the Blogging For Money recap for August:

  • AdSense:
  • Kontera:
  • ReviewMe:
  • TextLinkAds:
  • Amazon:
  • LinkWorth:
  • Private Ads:
  • Affiliate:
  • PayPerPost:
  • Misc:
  • Grand Total:
  • $105.92
  • $5.40
  • $50.00
  • $200.31
  • $2.25
  • $52.50
  • $87.50
  • $34.27
  • $0.00
  • $18.00
  • $556.15

First, lets take a look at the encouraging signs in the above summary.
The AdSense earnings more than doubled compared to the month of July. You’ll recall that a few months ago, one of my blogs was slapped by Google and had been hacked. The end result was that the traffic to that blog essentially disappeared, taking all of the earnings with it. Over the last few weeks, that traffic has been coming back and I am happy to see that the earnings are following right behind.
Another encouraging sign was the rare opportunity to write a ReviewMe review. It had been about six months since my last review, although I still knocked it out of the park and earned an additional $50 in the process.
Last but certainly not least, I was encouraged by the earnings with the recently added tool of PerformancingAds. After adding a couple of 125×125 ad spots to my blogs, I earned $18 for the month and that has more than doubled for the month of September. If you haven’t already, I recommend that you sign up now and try it out on your blog too.
Now for the discouraging signs from the month of August.
Two tools that had once been my largest sources of income, LinkWorth and TLA, continued their downward slide. That was to be expected when my blogs suffered the drop in page rank, although it is still discouraging. LinkWorth has all but completely dried up, with only one advertiser remaining right now; and TLA is on a similar path.
As I had mentioned in my closing comments last month, there were also a few private advertisement deals that were expiring. Unfortunately, I was not able to replace (or renew) those ads and had a drop in earnings here as well. In order to replace these private ads, I need to do a better job of seeking out advertisers but that is not something that I have done at all.
It should come as no surprise that Kontera had a sub par month yet again and I am going to temporarily remove it from my blog. That doesn’t mean it will never come back, but I need to test how the other tools perform without the dead weight that Kontera has been for the last few months.

Plans for September

Since August was a small step backward it is important to concentrate my efforts on making the month of September a step forward. There are many ways that this can be done, one of which will include the opportunity to network with some of the elite bloggers in the industry.
In a little more than a week, I will be leaving for Las Vegas to attend the BlogWorld & New Media Expo. I’ll be rubbing elbows with quite a few people that know a thing or two about making money online, so I will be doing my best to share the lessons that I have learned while also trying to absorb as much as possible. In addition, networking presents an opportunity to form relationships with people and there is no telling what can come of those relationships.
Another challenge that I will face is that I will be traveling to Miami, Florida for business, which means additional days away from the blog. Unlike the trip to BWE, this trip will not be focused on the Interweb and I will (most likely) not be networking with people that write their own blog. Although maybe I should approach this trip with the attitude of looking for a corporate sponsorship, lol.
As many of you know, blogging would not be nearly as much fun if there were not challenges along the way. Together we will face our challenges and all be better for it in the end.

I don’t think that you should blog for money. You should just bog from your heart and mind, post quality and interesting articles and you are going to see earning going way off the roof.

I’ve said a few times before that I am not blogging for the money, as I would still be writing here every day whether I was getting paid or not. But I understand the point that you are making.

Anyone who crosses the $100 per month mark with Adsense can be called a problogger, LOL! Good work, and the downward trends hardly matter. A couple of solid posts, and the trend gets reversed.

Lol, I’ve crossed the $100/mo barrier a few times with AdSense and it is a great feeling.

Even though earnings are declining through TLA and Linkworth, it’s amazing that you made so much with AdSense, and in the end, you’re still making over $500 a month, which is more than the majority of bloggers. After you attend that expo, I’m sure you’ll be able to increase that amount even further.

It is funny that I just mention the decrease in earnings from LinkWorth and today I have had a handful of new opportunities through their service – a few of which have been accepted and are now generating a little bit more income.
I am extremely excited about BlogWorld and having the opportunity to meet so many talented people!

Yes, I am trying many new tools to attract more visitors and to earn more money. Trying another ads network is also good too.

You may find that online revenue has decreased in August as generally August is a slow month for traffic online. People go away on holiday or spend time outdoors in the sun, so volumes of people looking for anything online go down.

Yeah, that does make sense and even though I don’t really have any products being sold, I did see an increase after the summer months last year.

Once again an inspiring post. Never mind, the southward journey. You know what needs to be done, and things will turn around once you get down to it.

It truly is amazing how dependent the world has become on the internet in so short a time. It’s almost hard to imagine the world without it nowadays.

Nice Work – Do you make much money from any refferals to these advertising programs?
I’m also finding my adsense at the moment to be extremely up and down in earnings and values per click – have you found this or is it pretty consistent?

On Boss Effects Pedal- My adsense seems to be inconsistent too. I think one should not only depend on one.

SocialSpark, PayPerPost, BuyBlogReviews, PayU2Blog … thewse are my mainstay. Although, I forget of I email you about this yet, I had someone visit my “Advertise on the Blog” page and offerred me a deal where I made $75 to put her textlinks on 5 posts in short paragraphs. We went out for steak and I had beer AND dessert LOL. Tell that guy up above about how making money doesn’t matter LOL. Only making fun. Thanks Derek.
