Speedlinking – BlogWorld Edition

by derek on September 22, 2008 · 17 comments

Wow…what a week it has been! The first part of the week was spent in Miami and then I returned home for a day before heading out to attend BlogWorld in Las Vegas!
Let me just tell you that BlogWorld was an amazing experience. Not only because of a few really great sessions but because of the people that I had a chance to meet. Actually, I’d say that the best part was the people that I had a chance to meet and I hope to see many more of them again.
Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to meet the two people that won tickets to the event through this blog but I wanted to use this edition of Speedlinking to give a shout to a handful of people that are straight-up kick ass people.
1. Danielle from MsDanielle.com has got to be one of the coolest people that I have met. Many of you might know that Danielle is my blog birthday buddy and I have to tell you that I couldn’t have picked a better person to share a birthday with. Not only is she crazy intelligent but she has that special quality of being able to make you laugh at any moment.
2. Gary from Mr. Gary Lee dot com and I go way back too, well in terms of the Interweb anyway. Even though I only got to hang with Gary on the expo floor (that bachelor party better have been worth it ), it was great to meet him and have a chance to shoot the shit a little bit. Gary, don’t forget that you owe me a link for that piece of gum!
3. Greg from BCMBlog.com was somebody that I have seen in a handful of Dot Com Pho videos but had never really known via the Interweb. We had a chance to hang Friday night at a variety of clubs and bars, as well as the expo floor on Saturday. Let me say that I have never seen anyone with mad jumping skills like this guy – from a standing position he jumped something like 17 feet.
4. Gary from iPhone in Canada.ca is another guy that I have seen in Dot Com Pho videos but have never really interacted with online. It was funny when we first met and we were talking about avatars and the fact that there are real people behind them, Gary says, “Wait…do you have an avatar with the shades on?” Yeah, that’s me man…living in Chi-City, er Chi-Town.
5. This last one is a group shout to the guys from Unique Blog Designs – one of the sickest blog and web design companies out there. UBD consists of Nate, Josh, and Matt. Not only are these guys dominating the blogosphere with their WordPress themes but they are funny as hell. From the Hennessey and OJ (mmm…good) to the cigars to the 17.9 Nate claims to be packing, I look forward to hanging with these guys again.
The whole weekend was full of surreal experiences, like having lunch with some of the people above and having Shoemoney and John Chow sit down and join us for lunch or witnessing a bet between Shoe and Samantha from NeverBlueAds that involved GSP from the UFC.
If you didn’t make it to BlogWorld this year, you’ve got to put it on your calendar for next year. If money is tight, just buy the expo pass and hang with people like these and you’re bound to head home with a wealth of knowledge and new friends.

Sounds like a great time. I frequent Gary and Danielle’s blogs too, they haven’t been posting much lately though but I guess maybe because Blog World’s been keeping them busy πŸ˜‰

It was neat meeting up with you and everyone else you mentioned too! Just super neat to be able to hang with everybody in person, instead of tweeting/IM’ing!
I haven’t received my copy of Dragon NS yet, maybe I’m supposed to hit up the Pirate Bay and get it myself?! haha!

Jumpping 17 feet from a standing position? That’s amazing! BTW, what exactly is “GSP from the UFC”?

Ok, 17 feet was a slight exaggeration but he did jump something like 8.5 feet.
GSP is Georges St. Pierre and the UFC is Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Wow that’s cool. I would love to meet John Cow and Shoe Money. But, I live in the UK so it’s not next door.

Yeah, long distance makes it tough to attend events like this but I think it can certainly be worth the trip.

Yeah, I bailed a little early on Sunday too as I tried to jump on an earlier flight home – unfortunately I never got the standby ticket and ended up on my original flight.

Isn’t it great when you go somewhere and meet like minded people that are all on the same kind of wavelength –
I tend to find this when I go to music gigs but I guess the same applies here – sounds like the people you met really made the time even more special.

Heh…I’ve had a few back and forth email convos with josh from UBD and can affirm…he one hella funny guy. Glad to hear you had a great time. Sadly, I wasn’t able to make it this year, but the blogosphere coverage has been great. Go figure…take a bunch of bloggers and put them in Vegas? Oh baby…that’s enough fodder for a years worth of content! πŸ™‚

The coolest about it is that you get to meet these people who are almost like celebrities and they are down to Earth people who are fun to talk to like that and not stuck-up snobs….I can’t wait for my chance to go to the Expo!
