Miscellaneous Quotes And Photos From BlogWorld08

A few days have passed now since returning home from BlogWorld08 and I thought that I would share with you a few quotes/comments that I picked up during a couple of the sessions, as well as embarrass myself by sharing a couple of pictures (for those that don’t know, I am very self-conscious of having my picture taken, for obvious reasons you will see).
First, a few tidbits that I picked up at the show:

  • When discussing the thing that makes the most money on their blog, two of four panelists mentioned that direct sales were the top earners. However, affiliate sales look like they will eventually surpass the direct advertising.
  • Find out where readers are congregating and determine how you can provide them with information. Example given by Darren Rowse related how he found a group of people on flickr that were looking for the information provided by his site on digital photography.
  • Build a trust with your readers. This is something that I really strive to do here, which is why I am so open and transparent with everything. I’ve got nothing to hide from the community and I hope that I am doing a good job of building that trust.
  • Amount of money that you can make in non-sexy categories is staggering. (Anyone that has not heard Brian Clark from Copyblogger speak needs to change that ASAP.)
  • Your audience will tell you what they want to buy.
  • Think less, plan less, and do more stupid shit.
  • Where do you want to craft your life?

Having an opportunity to sit and soak up information from the collection of speakers at BlogWorld was amazing, people like Brian Clark, Zac Johnson, Jim Kukral, Chris Brogan, Rob McNealy, and Jeremy Wright. It was also really interesting to hear Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park speak at the keynote on Sunday as he really seems to have grasped how the Interweb plays a role in his craft.
Now…on to the photos.
As much as I would prefer that nobody see these photos, I figured that they are out there on the Interweb so I might as well own up to them. It isn’t that they are photos of me in any compromising situations or anything, just that I never take a good picture as my eyes disappear.

This is me hanging with Ian Fernando, who I really need to talk to more so I can get to that point of making the thousands he kept telling people I was making.
In the background is Ted Murphy, founder and CEO of IZEA. I had really been hoping to attend IZEAFest as well but it didn’t work out for me this year.

This photo is a few of the people that I had the chance to party with on Friday night, including Nate, Josh, Phoebe, and Danielle.

BlogWorld Group

After partying it up on Friday night, I attended a couple of early sessions and then spent a good part of the day hanging out on the expo floor with the following group of people. Pictured from left are Zac, Reena, Gary, Greg, me, Danielle, Gary, and Matt.
Next year, I will have continued to make strides in overcoming my shyness and will hopefully get to see some of these same people and meet many more new people. For the time being, I need to digest all of the things that I learned this weekend and evaluate how that can change my business, as well as help others succeed in their business.

Nice pics, eyes and all. πŸ™‚ And that part about thinking less, planning less and doing more stupid stuff is absolutely right. That’s the kind of thing which resonates with readers.
