Say Hello To My Little Friend – Thesis Theme

Scarface Say Hello To My Little Friend

When I recently decided to poke my head out from the shadows of writing code for a few clients, I decided it wasn’t enough to simply say hello.
That’s not the way I roll.
After talking about using the Thesis theme for WordPress for a few clients, which you can see in my portfolio at Red Staple Media, I decided it was time to eat my own dog food so to speak.
With so much of my time spent working on client sites, my poor little blog was left rockin’ the old design for far too long. Now it wasn’t that I didn’t like the old design, as a matter of fact you will notice that some of the design elements have been carried forward, but it was time to be Thesisized (I’ve got dibs on that word).

Wax On, Wax Off

Daniel-san had Mr. Miyagi to turn him into a bad ass fightin’ machine. Who do you have to turn your blog or business site into the type of site that will beat the competition down?
You’ve got me…the WordPress Ninja!
When Doug from Doug Draws recently provided me with the sweet avatar that you now can see up in the header, I began to think of how I could redesign this blog and I knew that had to be incorporated. While chatting with Doug the other day, he commented how I was like a ninja quickly helping with his WordPress questions.
So not only do I have Doug to thank for the avatar, but he helped come up with the new slogan as well. As this rebranding moves forward, I am looking forward to having an opportunity to work with Doug on new projects and suggest you check out his work if you need some help defining your brand.

WordPress and Thesis Help Is Here

Having a passion for writing code and helping people solve their technical dilemmas, I will be focusing my efforts on providing help on anything and everything related to WordPress and the Thesis theme.
Have a problem?
Been scratching your head trying to figure something out?
Well, stop banging your head on the wall and channel the power of the WordPress Ninja to allow you to focus on the things that you do best.
With that said, give me shout and let me know what you think of the new design!

Hi! I really like your theme, especially the grunge style header. Those icons are awesome, too. Nice job all round! 😀

Simon, thanks for the feedback on the new design! I’m hoping to give the twitter icon a grunge look as well but went with what I had for now.
Glad you like it.
Hmm, just realized that something isn’t working right with the threaded comments. New replies are showing up at the bottom. Looks like I have more work to do. 🙂
Update – it looks like I’ve got the issue with the threaded comments resolved and everything should be good now. 🙂

Kelvin, glad to hear that you like it. And as a matter of fact, you did mention the idea of being a ninja in your comment on my post about lurking in the shadows.
Gotta give credit where credit is due, so thanks (and look for a nice little plug for you).

I like the design of the site as well. I do have a quick question for you regarding avatars. What are the best places/websites to get avatars from?

Frank, thanks for stopping by and sharing!
Regarding the avatars, there are a few sites that will let you create them. However, in this case my avatar is based on a picture of me that I sent to Doug and he used that to create me a completely custom avatar. I’d recommend you shoot him a note and see what you guys can do!

hi Derek,
The new theme is great (and clean) but this post is even better. I love the Pacino pic and the references to “eating your own dog food”. Great post! And it’s great to see some new posts here too! ~ Steve, the trade show displays guru

Steve, thanks for the feedback on the theme as well as the new content. The title for this post was almost “Eating Your Own Dog Food” but then the famous line from Scarface hit me and I just had to go with that.
Look forward to hearing from you!

I am very much impressed with the quality of your Thesis mods. I love the theme, but I’m no good with coding or design, so my place still looks kind of bland–functional, but bland. I am just amazed because I would have never thought it was a Thesis theme when I clicked through.

Professor Beej, thanks for the kind words regarding the new design. One of my goals was to make it not have all the tell-tale signs of a Thesis theme, although there are still a few that give it away.
Have you installed Thesis 1.6 yet? There are more design controls to allow you the ability to tweak things before you need to dig into the CSS and PHP code.

I appreciate your willingness to “eat your own dog food,” so to speak. I guess it doesn’t hurt when it comes to using Thesis. I’ve had the opportunity to use it during a recent project and I found that it is a pleasure to work with. In addition, you’ve manager to tweak it nicely while keeping your blog clean – which doesn’t happen very often. Well done.

Russell, thanks for stopping by and sharing. I’ve been quite happy working with Thesis on the sites I’ve done with it. I’m a big fan of clean designs as well so hearing that is rewarding.

This is my first time to the blog, so I have not seen the old color. I like this one though. I like how easy it is to navigate through your blog as well.
As to the avatar, is it really what you look like? If it is, you look completely different than what I imagined (in a good way). I tend to form an image of what people look like when I read their blog. Not sure why I do it.

derek November 10, 2009 at 11:23 am

Well, I had intended for their to be a link to the old design but I just realized that I “fat-fingered” the HTML for the link and it wasn’t working properly. It has now been updated and the link to the old design is now functional.
Re: the avatar, yes it is based on me. You can see the real deal on my twitter profile pic or my Facebook as well. Although I think the avatar is more flattering. 🙂

Haha, looks awesome.
I also love your new design of the blog, must of taken a lot of time!
Thesis is something I wanted to use for some time now for my blog: http://eastbournewebdesign.net/blog but I just have no time to go properly into it and explore the opportunities it gives for usability and CMS aspects of WP.

derek November 10, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Krystian, thanks for the feedback.
As with most things, I had about 95% of the redesign done in no time at all and then spent a few hours tweaking the CSS to get everything just right. Overall it really didn’t take that long though.
If you do get the chance to dig into it a little bit, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Hi,
First time to your blog and I must say I really like the design, in particular your email, rss and twitter icons – did you design these yourself? Nice logo also!
Will keep checking back for advice when required,
Many thanks wp ninja

No I did not design the icons myself, while I might be a code ninja when it comes to graphics I can spend hours futzing around with Photoshop and not end up with something presentable.
Thanks for stopping by. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hey nice theme, it’s simple but well thought out. The icons are sweet to. I love the thesis theme. I use it on my blog and added a cool fall theme to it, I designed it for a small town Huntsville Ontario check it out if you have the time

morkie, thanks for stopping by and sharing your feedback on my Thesis customizations. Fall is my favorite time of the year so naturally I am liking the background of your site. Things are looking good.
If I could make two suggestions, I would try to add some distinguishable style to the sidebar headings to make them stand out from the rest of the text a little more and I’d eliminate that gap between the header and the content area. Those are just my personal opinion / preference.

Thesisized indeed! In my opinion, the theme looks superb! Thesis is highly effective. It possesses an incredibly efficient HTML, CSS, PHP framework as well as easy-to-use settings which allow you to fine-tune every single web page with a tactical accuracy that has in no way been feasible in the past.
