Analysis Paralysis

by derek on April 21, 2010 · 8 comments

Over the last few weeks I have been spending an inordinate amount of time thinking about resuming my writing on the blog but not actually doing anything about it. The problem is not so much what to write or having the time to write, but more about where to write.
In the time that I have been blogging there have been a handful of blogs started, some with hundreds of posts and some with but a single post.
With the desire to write on a variety of topics, I’ve gone back and forth on whether it would be best to publish each post on the blog where it would be most targeted, or to just write here and let the chips fall where they may. At the end of the day, I am left having not published anything due to analysis paralysis where the excessive thought process and brainstorming results in nothing being done.
Rather than continue down that path, I thought it would be best to simply get started and let the process define itself as I move forward. Therefore, you may have to endure an assortment of ramblings as this will be the home, at least temporarily, for my brain dump of information.
While I would still like the ultimate goal of this site to be focused on WordPress and helping other bloggers, you may very well find posts like my previously published 10 reasons being a Dad rocks or more posts about Harley mods (btw, go say hello to @darkcustom and drool with me over the blacked out bikes).
Maybe you will like the variety, maybe you won’t.
But to continue spending so much time thinking about it and not doing anything is not good for anyone, so the time has come to squash analysis paralysis and sit back, relax, and strap it down (my apologies for the Hawk Harrelson reference).
To the new visitors and the old friends, remember that this blog community values your feedback – both good and bad – so please share your thoughts.

Hey, keep the ramblings coming. That’s why I am here. 😀
As for WordPress stuff, that’s more of icing on the cake for me. And I emphasize the “for me” part since I am a programmer so if I really want to, I can probably find the info I want and understand it in plenty of places on the web. However, I found that you do have a knack for making it easy by explaining the code snippets in clear ways so that’s a good thing.

Hiya Kelvin!
Thanks for sharing your feedback on the ramblings and the input on the WordPress stuff. While I know that it won’t be possible to make all of the people happy all of the time, hopefully I can strike enough balance to keep things interesting.
Hope you’ve been doing well!

Hey Man – Keep up the blogging!
I enjoyed checking out the mix of posts, that’s what makes the internet such an interesting place. Don’t think about it, just post I say!

Hi Derek,
So great to be able to read your ramblings again. I wanted to share my thoughts on what I would do if I were you. If you want to sell blog installs I would first publish what someone interested in hiring you would need including testimonials and specific tasks as I wrote about in the freelancing post I put in CommentLuv in this comment.
Then I would focus on this blog and as you said, “simply get started and let the process define itself as I move forward”.

Posting a variety of topics has their pros and cons. Ultimately, I think it all depends on who you are trying to reach to and I guess, what your goal when you post blogs. I’m a regular visitor here at your blog and I’m proud to be part of your community. And I really think you’re doing a great job.

I’m guilty of this one, and I’ll admit it. I’m very analytical by nature and catch myself over thinking and over planning. One can usually always make corrections or fix things that don’t start off as planned. In the online world taking action is probably more important than anything.
