Market Samurai: Looking At A WordPress Ninja

by derek on January 11, 2011 · 18 comments

With the new year upon us and a time for renewing hobbies and activities that have been collecting dust (doesn’t that usually involve a treadmill?) I have been reviewing the assortment of websites that I have built over the years. In 2011, I have committed to renewing my efforts to earning revenue via the Interweb – which will likely include a combination of blogging, affiliate marketing, and other opportunities.
After having spent far more time than anyone realistically should in reading the forums over at Warrior Forum (highly recommended if you’re interested in Interweb Marketing), I recently decided to download the free trial of Market Samurai.

What is Market Samurai?

Market Samurai is a keyword analysis tool. Sounds pretty basic on the surface, but after having explored the tool for just a few minutes I’ve already realized that it provides a wealth of information.

Anyone that has made an effort to make money online knows that there are a few key elements that go a long way towards determining your success, primarily:

  1. targeted keywords;
  2. available traffic;
  3. ability to capture said traffic;
  4. market competition;

One of the common tools that people use is Google’s free Keyword Tool. The nice thing – other than being free – is that you enter in your keywords and Google will return how many people are searching for that keyword, as well as related keywords. In addition, they provide a general summary of how much competition there is for that keyword.
While Market Samurai doesn’t necessarily replace the data you collect from Google’s tool, it does provide some additional information that can be extremely helpful in determining the right keywords and niche for you to target.

Quick example with the WordPress Ninja

As you can see in the header of this blog, I’ve playfully labeled myself as a WordPress Ninja. Using that as a sample in Market Samurai, I wanted to see what I would come up with as I used the variety of tools that are offered.
Rank Tracker
The Rank Tracker tool is designed to provide you a quick overview of all your search engine rankings. It includes Google, Yahoo, and Bing as available search engines and allows you to toggle phrase match results on / off. This feature allows you to examine rankings for your overall site or for specific keywords.

WordPress Ninja Rank Tracker

In the screen shot above, you can see my test as I checked this domain for the keywords WordPress Ninja and WordPress Consulting. After the display of the keyword, the first item displayed is the current ranking in Google followed by the number of page back links and finally the page rank.
This site currently ranks in the #4 position on Google for WordPress Ninja and I have 6,625 page back links (which is the number of external links pointing to this page) with a page rank of 3.
SEO Competition
One of the other great pieces of information offered by Market Samurai is the SEO Competition analysis. This feature allows you to compare the top-10 ranked competitors for the keyword you are targeting. With this tool, you can examine how you stack up against the competition or even use this to determine whether or not a particular keyword or niche is worth targeting.
Below is a snapshot of how my site ranks for WordPress Ninja showing a domain age of 4 years, page rank of 3, and index count of 1,080 pages indexed by Google.

WordPress Ninja SEO Competition

The interesting aspect of this feature is to compare your own site against the top 10 ranked sites for any given keyword. Often times you think the page with the highest page rank and the most page links will be at the top of the results.
But take a look at the following results using another one of my sites.

Football Workouts Ranking

Using my site targeted towards football workouts and using that as the keyword, I can see that my site ranks in the 10th spot on Google.
Looking at my numbers / rankings in each category, you can see they are not overly impressive. This site has a page rank of 0 and only has 12 page back links with 61 domain back links – and I am on the first page of Google! The link directly below me has a page rank of 3 and has 4 page back links but over 275,000 domain back links.

What is my advantage?

If you take a close look at the last screen shot, you might be able to recognize one of the key pieces of information that allows my little site to rank on the first page of Google with monster websites. Most of the other sites in the top 10 have hundreds if not thousands more pages indexed and back links created.
Have you noticed the key difference that my site has that the others don’t?
If not, be sure come back when I continue to share more details of what Market Samurai has to offer and how it can help you target the right keywords and niches to improve your earning potential.

I have been using Market Samurai for a while now and have been lucky in exploring its full potential when I decided to join Ed Dale´s 30 day challenge. Right there and then, I knew that it was a fantastic tool that serious online entrepreneurs should have a hands on.
Anyway, I will go for a wild guess here, but I thing that the reason you are there with the big “monsters” is because you have in your domain’s URL, the keyword “footballworkout”. Am I close? Hot or Cold, lol

I’ve been reading a good deal of information from people that have participated in that 30 day challenge and it seems like a great program. I haven’t yet investigated it further though. It sounds like you too would recommend that, correct?
As for the secret sauce on why my site is listed among the top ten, you’re absolutely correct. But don’t go giving away the secret, lol. 😉

Is this a Wordpress plugin or a standalone piece of software? I’ve been having bad luck with WP plugins that really slow down my site, and I’m wondering if Wordpress Ninja would or not.

This is completely stand-alone software built on the Adobe AIR platform. There are features of the tool that would allow you to create content for your blog, but I have not yet explored exactly how that works.
So far I am impressed with data that I have found using the tool and in the training videos that they offer.

Just to be clear, Market Samurai is not a WordPress plugin. It is capable of connecting to your WP blog, but the application runs on your computer as an Adobe AIR application.

Ahh, my apologies for not knowing – and I just realized that I failed to include an actual link over to Market Samurai within the post. Sorry about that.

I have tried various keyword research tools and a lot of them appear to be great keyword research programs. However, none of them have come close to Market Samurai and what it offers. It’s practically an all-in-one Internet marketing tool and not just a keyword research tool.

I’ve been using Market Samurai for quite sometime and I’m really impressed with their keyword research functionality and rank tracker. I guess Market Samurai’s rank tracker is the most accurate software so far.
